Setting up your Macintosh for an Internet connection

From the apple menu, choose system preferences. 

Next, click on the network icon

Click the arrow box on the Configure pop-up list and choose Internal Modem. Click on the TCP/IP tab. Click the arrow box on the Configure pop-up list and choose Using PPP. In the Domain Name Servers box, type the DNS server addresses for your domain (i.e. 65.116.40.10 and 65.116.40.254 for OOIDA ISP customers). In the Search Domains box, type your domain (i.e. ooidaisp.com for OOIDA ISP members). Click on the PPP tab. .

In the Service Provider field, type OOIDA ISP. In the Telephone Number field, type a local OOIDA ISP access number. In the Alternate number field, type as alternate access number. In the Account Name field, type your email address. In the Password field, type your password. Check the box next to Save password. Click the PPP Options button.

Check the box next to Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications. Uncheck the box next to Prompt to stay connected. Uncheck the box next to Disconnect if idle. Check the box next to Disconnect when user logs out. Click the OK button.

Click on the Proxies tab. Uncheck all the boxes. Click on the Modem tab.

Click the arrow box on the Modem pop-up list and choose Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.90). Click the Tone radio button in the Dialing area. Click the Save button. Close the Network window.

When the connection to PowerNet is complete, use your browser or another Internet application to connect to Web sites, send and receive mail, or do other tasks. FreePPP

  1. Open the phone icon in the upper right portion of the screen and then select the "Open PPP Connection" option.
  2. Watch the status display, after it connects run your web browser or other Internet utilities.
To disconnect from the Internet:

If you connected using Remote Access or "Connect To" in the Apple menu, open the Apple menu and choose Remote Access Status, then click Disconnect. You can also disconnect by clicking the Remote Access portion of the Control Strip and choosing Disconnect from the pop-up menu. For FreePPP, select the phone icon and then go to "Close PPP Connection"

Changing your default Web browser

To change the default browser you use to connect to the World Wide Web, use the Web section of the Internet control panel.

Note: On most computers, two browsers are included with the Mac OS: Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. If you want to use one of these browsers and it is not installed on your hard drive, use the Mac OS installer to add the browser software you want. The Mac OS installer is located on your Mac OS CD or the software install CD that came with your computer.
