What is
the difference between an ISP and OSP primarly;
PowerNet Global Communication's Internet service and
AOL's Internet Service?
The primary difference between our Internet service
and the competitions services (AOL, CompuServe, Etc.)
is that we are a full service Internet Service
Provider (ISP) and the above companies are a few
examples of an Online Service Provider.
The major difference between the two types of services
are as follows. PowerNet Global Communications provide
a direct dial up connection to the Internet. There are
no limitations, regulations or restrictions on what
you can or can not access because your computer is
connected directly to the Internet. You can go
anywhere, do anything you wish and PNG will not
prevent you from accessing whatever it is your in
search of, as long as it is available on-line.
However with an Online service provider, such as AOL;
they use "gateways" to the Internet that
their users can "see" through. While you
will still be able to "browse the Internet",
these "gateways" allow the Online Service
Provider to limit your Internet access to whatever the
OSP wishes the user to "see"; or to whatever
the OSP is capable of providing the user access to and
along with limitations most OSP's have proprietary
software that assists in limiting the user into only
being able to "see" certain things on the
web and within the OSP's online community. While
accessing the Internet through an OSP (AOL) You are
NOT on the Internet, you are Online through your OSP's
servers that are allowing you access to again certain
areas of the Internet.
As for an ISP, some providers may deliver along with
their service a proprietary starter softwar package.
However users are able to use any internet software
applications available to them. Another thing to keep
in mind is that when your online with an ISP your
connection speeds are faster because there's no third
party involved in your connection to the Internet
because with an ISP such as PowerNet Global
Communications, you are literally on the Internet.
Now if it is the users preference to use an OSP's
Online Community but would prefer to have full blown
access to the Internet most OSP's such as AOL for
example provide a "Piggy-back System" this
means that you can log onto AOL through your TCP/IP
protocols using a regular ISP which would again speed
up the users general connection speeds. For only a
limited price determined by the OSP, the user now has
a variety of options as for AOL a user can obtain this
"Piggy-back System" for a small charge of
only $14.95 to AOL and an additional $14.95 to PNG. So
in turn for a price bundled together with AOL's or the
OSP's Online Community ("Piggy-back System")
PNG can provide a very comparable price going up
against AOL's stand alone service. For a direct and
faster connection to the Internet.
