Web Page Starter Guide

This document is intended to help you get your personal web page started! We will not be able to teach you how to make a web page, only how to use the space and upload the pages. PowerNet Global offers you 10 Megabytes of space for use on your personal web site. It is the user’s responsibility to design, troubleshoot, and support their web site. Please do not call Technical Support for your personal web page. The Internet is an excellent source for finding out information on all aspects of your personal web sites.

Your web address will be http://www.pngusa.net/~username, where username is replaced by the username given to you by the PowerNet Global Representative that signed your service up. You also have the option to signup for a vanity domain. A vanity domain makes it easier to give your web address out to friends, family, co-workers, and potential employers. This address would appear as http://username.pngusa.net.

There are two steps that you must do when setting up a web site. Step one involves writing the page. The second step that must be done after developing a web site is uploading the page to our web server.

You can invest a little time and research HTML code and actually write the page. Or you can use an HTML editor, which basically writes the code for you. Netscape Composer, Microsoft FrontPage, and various other HTML coders (available at http://winfiles.cnet.com/apps/98/webauth.html) make the job much easier for a beginner!

After developing the web page to your satisfaction, the page must now be uploaded. Many of the web page editors mentioned above have their own basic file transfer (FTP, File Transfer Protocol) utilities built in to send the files you've made up to our web server. However, we recommend that instead of using the limited file transfer features of those editors, it is better to download and use a full-featured FTP program.

Uploading your homepage: The basics

This information can be applied to any FTP program of your choice. Connection, profile, or session name: depending on your program it may be called one of these or something similar. Basically what you need to put in that spot is a name that you will associate with your pngusa.net homepage.

Server Name: ftp.pngusa.net
Username:  Put in your full email address with the @pngusa.net
Password: Put in the password that you used to logon to pngusa.net.  Your username and password are case sensitive.
Remote directory: public_html
(If you don't put this in you may have to double click on the public_html
directory once you are logged in.  All of your webpage files need to be uploaded into the public_html directory. The main document of your  webpage must be named index.htm or index.html)
Port Number: 21 (If your program asks for it.)
Number of Retires: 99 (But you will probably get in on the first try.)

WS_FTP

You can download a 30-day trial version of this product from http://www.cnet.com/downloads. Simply type "wsftp" in the search box and you’ll be given the ability to download!

After you have downloaded and installed WS_FTP on your personal computer, double-click the program to open it up.

In the Session Profile window, enter the following:

Host Name: ftp.pngusa.net
Host Type: Automatic Detect
User ID: your full email address
Password: your password

Fetch

You can download a trial version of this program from http://www.cnet.com/downloads, as well.

After downloading and installing the program, open it up and select New Connection. Set up as follows:

Host: ftp.pngusa.net
User ID: your full email address
Password: your password
Directory: leave this blank

And click on the "OK" button.

You'll see the program connect to your file area on pngusa.net. Go into the Remote pull down menu and choose the "Put Files or Folders" option. This will bring up the standard file dialog window, which you'll use to find the files you would like to upload. Once found, highlight the files to upload and click onto the OK button. You'll then be prompted for which method you want to use when you upload the files-choose "Raw Data". Once that is done, the Fetch software will start uploading those files from your local machine to our remote servers and directories. To delete files from the directory, highlight the files you  want to remove, then go up to the Remote -> Delete Folders or Files option.

CuteFTP

1.  You will need to enter in a "Site Label". This is the same as "Profile  Name" in WS_FTP. IE: "John Doe's Angel Web Site"
2.  For "Host Address", enter in "ftp.pngusa.net" (without the quotes)
3.  For "User ID", enter in your email address and do the same for "Password"
4.  For "Login Type", set that to "normal"
5  .For "Transfer Type" and for "Host Type", set both of these to "Auto-Detect"
6.  For "Initial Remote Directory", enter in the path to your public_html directory
7.  Once you are done with the above settings, click on "Connect" and allow CuteFTP to connect to the ftp server. To copy files to your web area, simply double click or drag and drop.

Once again, keep in mind that personal web sites are considered "self-serve." You are responsible for maintaining the web site as well as resolving any issues or problems that you run into without the assistance of PowerNet Global.
